China ex-minister guilty of graft Tian Fengshang Beijing fears corruption could undermine Communist Party rule A court in the Chinese capital Beijing has sentenced a former minister to life in jail for taking huge bribes.
Tian Fengshan, once the minister for land and resources, was convicted of accepting more than 4m yuan ($500,000), Xinhua news agency said.
The Chinese government is trying to crackdown on corruption, amid fears it could undermine Communist Party rule.
Tian is one of the most prominent people to be accused of graft since a senior lawmaker was executed in 2000.
Beijing Number 2 Intermediate People's Court said, "the defendant... took advantage of his position to profit while a servant of the nation", in a ruling quoted by Xinhua.
Tian escaped a more severe penalty because he confessed and "repented his crimes," according to the agency.
Tian was the governor of the north-eastern province of Heilongjiang for five years, and then served as land and resources minister from 2000 to 2003.
He was accused of profiting from graft for a period of eight years between 1995 and 2003.
Details of Tian's wrongdoing have not been revealed. | |
